About the role

Communal is software for community and member-based organizations: community centres, municipal recreation departments, nonprofits, cultural centres, and summer camps. More than 500 organizations run on it today.

We want to become one of the biggest nonprofit software companies in the world, by serving the organizations the software industry usually overlooks. You will work across the codebase with our technical co-founder, and you will take features from the first problem discussion through to deployment.

What you will do

  • Frontend: build Vue interfaces that non-technical staff and volunteers can use without training.
  • Backend: work in PHP and Laravel on payments, memberships, bookings, programs, and reporting.
  • Product: decide how a feature should work when the spec stops short.
  • Infrastructure: help look after CI/CD pipelines and servers.
  • Use coding agents every day to ship faster. There is room to build AI features into the product for volunteer-heavy organizations.

What you bring

  • 1 to 3 years building web applications, in any stack.
  • You learn quickly, and you can drop into code you have not seen before, find the cause, and ship the fix the same day.
  • You already use AI tools and know where they help and where they mislead.
  • You write clearly and work well with others.
  • You are comfortable when priorities change, and you can direct your own work.
  • You care about the people who use what you build.
  • You live in Calgary, or are moving here. We are in the office Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Nice to have

  • Experience with PHP, Laravel, Vue, or MySQL. None of it is required, and we are glad to teach.
