The best SignUpGenius alternatives in 2026, compared on what they actually do

Most organizations outgrow SignUpGenius when sign-up sheets stop being enough: each sheet stands alone, so there is no volunteer record, no running hour total and no check-in history. Stay on SignUpGenius if you only need occasional slot sign-ups with no accounts.

    Communal

    Our pick

Volunteer shifts and hour tracking with real volunteer records behind them

Volunteer opportunities, shifts, capacity, role-restricted signups, clock in and out hour tracking and attendance sit on a real volunteer record rather than an anonymous slot.

Check first: Volunteers sign in to a portal rather than clicking a public link with no account; there is no SMS and no public opportunity marketplace.

    • Memberships
    • Programs
    • Events
    • Facilities
    • Volunteers
    • Donations
    • POS
    • Chapters
    Best for
Community associations, recreation and community centers, clubs and leagues, cultural organizations and chapter-based groups that run programs or rent space.
  2. 02

    Get Connected by Galaxy Digital

A public opportunity portal with check-in and hour tracking

Get Connected by Galaxy Digital publishes volunteer opportunities on a public portal with auto-matching, event landing pages, check-in, hour tracking, waivers, e-signature, text and email and a mobile app.

Check first: Better Impact acquired Galaxy Digital in March 2026; reviewers cite a learning curve and time-consuming onboarding.

    Covers
    • Volunteers
    Best for
Volunteer centers and community hubs that need a public opportunity marketplace with agency management
  3. 03

    VolunteerHub

Shift scheduling, waitlists and text reminders for shift-heavy programs

VolunteerHub gives you event and shift scheduling, waitlists, automated email and text, hour tracking, digital waivers and a mobile app on every plan, with kiosk check-in on the higher tier.

Check first: Annual contract plus a set-up fee, no free trial, and volunteer-only.

    Covers
    • Volunteers
    • Donations
    Best for
Nonprofits that mostly need shift-based volunteer scheduling and check-in with some volunteer fundraising
  4. 04

    Zeffy

Free forms, ticketing and memberships funded by optional donor tips

Zeffy charges US and Canadian nonprofits nothing: no subscription, no platform fee and no processing fee, with donors shown an optional tip at checkout.

Check first: Volunteer signups are a workaround through the event form type; there is no shift scheduling or hour tracking, and Zeffy itself points volunteer coordinators elsewhere.

    Covers
    • Memberships
    • Events
    • Donations
    Best for
Small US or Canadian nonprofits that want donation forms, ticketing, and basic memberships with zero software cost
  5. 05

    Bloomerang Volunteer

Skills-based shift scheduling tied to the Bloomerang donor CRM

Bloomerang Volunteer (formerly InitLive) schedules shifts by skills, roles and availability with mobile check-in, standalone or bundled with Bloomerang fundraising and CRM.

Check first: No free trial, annual billing, pricing scales with records.

    Covers
    • Volunteers
    Best for
Nonprofits already on (or moving to) Bloomerang CRM that run shift-heavy volunteer events
  6. 06

    Neon CRM

A donor CRM with volunteers and events on the Impact tier

Neon CRM gives unlimited records and users, so volunteers, donors and event attendees share one database instead of living in separate sign-up pages.

Check first: Entry tier is fundraising-only, processing is 2.99% + $0.30 and there is no free trial.

    • Memberships
    • Events
    • Volunteers
    • Donations
    Best for
Growing nonprofits and membership associations that want a single CRM covering donors, members, events, and volunteers with unlimited records

Why people leave SignUpGenius

  • No volunteer database, no hour history

SignUpGenius is a sign-up sheet: each sheet stands alone, so there is no volunteer profile, no running hour total and no year-over-year record. Coordinators end up rebuilding the history in a spreadsheet.

  • 5% + $0.50 on every payment

Collecting dues, program fees or event tickets through SignUpGenius costs 5% of the money collected plus $0.50 per transaction, available on Silver and up. On a $200 registration that is $10.50 per family.

  • Ads and dated templates on the free plan

The free tier is supported by ads that appear to volunteers and parents, and reviewers describe the templates as dated. Removing the ads means moving to one of the paid tiers.

  • No members, bookings, leagues or POS

A community association or club that uses SignUpGenius for volunteers still needs somewhere for memberships, facility rentals, league schedules and front-desk sales. The sheets never connect to the member record.

Communal vs SignUpGenius

Where Communal wins
  • A volunteer record, not a sheet

In Communal every signup, shift, clock in/out and attendance mark lands on a volunteer profile with hour totals, tags and custom fields, exportable to CSV or XLSX. SignUpGenius sheets do not build a history.

  • Volunteer discounts applied to program registration

Programs can carry a volunteer price that qualifying volunteers receive automatically at checkout, which is how leagues reward coaches and shift workers. SignUpGenius has no member pricing and no volunteer status to key it on.

  • Members, rentals, donations and POS on the same record

The base plan includes member CRM, automated renewals, Apple and Google Wallet cards, donations with automatic tax receipts and POS software, with programs and facilities as add-on modules. SignUpGenius does not hold member records at all.

  • Lower cost to collect money

Communal has no monthly minimums on payments; the card-processing application fee is set in your agreement, often about 2%, with weekly deposits to your own Stripe Connect account and a donor-covers-fees option. SignUpGenius takes 5% + $0.50 per transaction.

Where SignUpGenius wins
  • You need a sheet that parents or volunteers can fill in from a link with no account, for a potluck, a carpool, a bake sale or a tournament weekend.
  • Your budget is $0 and you can live with ads, or $11.99/mo to remove them.
  • You want one tool for many unrelated sign-ups: volunteer slots, teacher conferences, snack rosters, ticket sales and simple forms.
  • You have developers who want the REST API (Silver limited calls; Gold and Platinum up to 5,000 calls/day).

Who should stay on SignUpGenius

Stay on SignUpGenius if your needs really are occasional sheets: a few events a year, volunteers who do not want accounts, and no money changing hands through the tool. It is the cheapest way to fill slots and it does that well. Move when you need to know who volunteered how many hours last year, when the 5% + $0.50 payment fee starts to add up, or when the same people are also members, renters and program parents.

The best fit by organization type

Best SignUpGenius alternative for community associations and leagues

Communal. Shift signups, dues, kids registration and hall or court rentals share one member record, and volunteer discounts apply automatically at registration. The EFCL runs 163 community leagues on it.

Best SignUpGenius alternative for charities and food banks

Communal for recurring shifts, hour tracking and donations with automatic receipts on one record. Zeffy if the main thing you collect through SignUpGenius is money and you want it free, or Bloomerang Volunteer if you already run Bloomerang CRM.

Best SignUpGenius alternative for event volunteer programs

VolunteerHub when the event needs waitlists, text reminders and kiosk check-in. Galaxy Digital when you recruit from the public through an opportunity portal, and Communal when the event belongs to a club or league that already manages members in it.

Best SignUpGenius alternative for recreation departments

Communal. Program registration with waitlists and attendance, facility booking with approvals and recurring bookings, and volunteer shifts on one system, with resident vs non-resident pricing by address.

Switching from SignUpGenius

How a move to Communal actually goes.

There is little to migrate from SignUpGenius; most organizations are live in Communal within a week.

  1. 1

Export participant lists from your SignUpGenius sheets and any volunteer hour spreadsheet as CSV; we map names, emails and roles to Communal profiles and tags and run a dry-run import.

  2. 2

Create your opportunities and recurring shifts in Communal with capacity and role restrictions, and add historical hours as an import so totals start from the right number.

  3. 3

Replace the SignUpGenius links on your website and newsletter with the Communal portal, send volunteers their invites, and turn on shift reminders and clock in/out.

Hawkwood Community Association moved pickleball courts and a community garden off spreadsheets onto Communal. Read the case study.
