The short version
Pick Traction Rec if you are a large YMCA or community center, you have or want Salesforce as your system of record, and you need membership, programs, child care, fundraising and a finance subledger on one constituent profile. Pick ACTIVENet if you are a large city or county parks department that needs enterprise hosting, league scheduling, childcare, POS and BI access, and can run a per-transaction model with an implementation engagement. Pick neither if you are a small community center, YMCA branch or association without Salesforce expertise or a five-figure software budget.
Where ACTIVENet wins
- Parks and recreation depth. Activities, facilities, memberships, league scheduling, POS, childcare and mobile apps with a large installed base across municipal departments. Traction Rec's league scheduling is not documented.
- No Salesforce dependency. ACTIVENet is a hosted platform you buy as a whole. Traction Rec requires Salesforce licences and Salesforce administration skills in-house or on contract.
- Pass-through fee model. ACTIVENet's per-registration fee can be absorbed or passed to participants. Traction Rec is an annual license; its transaction fee schedule is not published.
- BI access. ACTIVE Hub exposes data for BI integrations; Traction Rec relies on Salesforce's own reporting and open APIs, which is strong if you are already a Salesforce shop and an extra layer if you are not.
Where Traction Rec wins
- One constituent record. A 360-degree view of each member, donor, volunteer and program participant on Salesforce, with no-code workflow automation and open APIs.
- Fundraising and finance. Integrated donor management and a finance subledger alongside membership and programs. ACTIVENet has no accounting and its donation capability is not documented.
- A published starting price. $10,000 USD per company per year on AppExchange, with nonprofits eligible for Salesforce nonprofit discounts. ACTIVENet has no public figure at all.
- Free trial. Traction Rec offers one; ACTIVENet does not.
Pricing in practice
Traction Rec's floor is knowable: $10,000/yr per company, plus Salesforce licences (discounted for eligible nonprofits), plus whoever administers Salesforce for you. What you cannot read in advance is the per-user pricing or transaction fee schedule. ACTIVENet's floor is not knowable without a quote: a per-registration fee that is a percentage plus a dollar amount, a hosted annual minimum, and upfront implementation that the vendor describes as mostly consulting. Both are typically annual or multi-year agreements with unpublished terms. For a YMCA, add up Salesforce licences for every staff user before comparing; for a parks department, multiply ACTIVENet's fee by real annual registrations and decide whether residents or the department pay it.
Who should pick which
| If you are... | Lean towards |
|---|
| A large YMCA or community center standardizing on Salesforce | Traction Rec (from $10,000/yr + licences) |

| A large city or county parks department with leagues and childcare | ACTIVENet |
| A department that wants to pass the platform fee to participants | ACTIVENet |
| A parks department with no Salesforce skills and no wish to acquire them | ACTIVENet |
| A small community center, YMCA branch or association | Neither; see the third option |
The third option
If you are a small community center, YMCA branch, community association or small town, both of these are more system than you can buy or staff. Communal was built for that tier: memberships with household accounts and resident pricing by map boundary, program registration with waitlists and attendance, facility booking with approvals and invoices, donations with automatic tax receipts and recurring giving, and volunteer shifts with hour tracking, at $75/mo flat to 250 members with donor and volunteer management and POS software included, programs +$50/mo, facilities from +$50/mo, no contract, free scoped migration and a 30-day self-serve trial. It has no Salesforce integration, no general ledger, no childcare module and no native mobile app, and it is not built for a large municipal procurement. Communal is our product; the comparison above is drawn from the two vendors' published materials.
