The short version
Neon CRM is a donor database that grew membership, events and volunteer modules. Communal is a membership database that grew donations, programs, facilities and volunteers. Ask which word comes first in your annual report. If it is "donors", Neon CRM is the more natural home, with unlimited records and fundraising workflows. If it is "members", "registrants" or "leagues", Communal does more of your week at a lower entry price, with a trial you can start today.
Where Communal wins
- Lower price for a membership organization. $75/mo to 250 members with member CRM, volunteers, donations and POS software included; +$50/mo for programs and events. Neon CRM's $99/mo Essentials tier is fundraising only; memberships, events, volunteers and the open API start at Impact, $209/mo.
- Programs and facilities. Program registration with waitlists, age gates, attendance and member, public and volunteer price tiers; facility booking for courts, rooms and halls with approvals, recurring seasonal blocks and invoices from +$50/mo. Neon CRM has no facility booking.
- Trial and terms. 30-day trial, no credit card, no contract, prorated billing, free scoped migration. Neon CRM has no free trial and annual terms are typical.
- Payment rate and currencies. Card fee often about 2% with weekly deposits to your own Stripe account, in CAD, USD, GBP or EUR, with Canadian pre-authorized debit. Neon Pay is 2.99% + $0.30 per card transaction.
- Member-facing extras. Apple and Google Wallet cards, household memberships, resident vs non-resident pricing by map boundary, and a member portal in 11 locales.
Where Neon CRM wins
- Unlimited records on every plan. Contacts, users, emails and forms are unlimited, so a large donor file does not move your price. Communal is banded by member count and quoted above 20,000.
- Deeper fundraising. Constituent management, workflow automation (3 on Essentials, 15 on Impact, unlimited on Empower), an online store and NCOA address updates on Empower. Communal has no peer-to-peer, auctions or pipeline tooling.
- Support and maturity. Phone and live chat support on Empower, real-time reconciliation through Neon Pay, and a long track record with US nonprofits.
- One CRM for a fundraising-led nonprofit. If memberships are a small program inside a donor organization, Neon keeps everything in one donor record.
Pricing in practice
Price the tier that actually includes what you do. A nonprofit that only needs donation pages and a constituent list pays Neon $99/mo. The moment you add memberships or events you are at $209/mo on Impact, before Neon Pay's 2.99% + $0.30. Communal's equivalent is $125/mo ($75 base plus $50 programs), with volunteers and donations already inside and a card fee often about 2%. Add from +$50/mo on Communal if you book spaces. Scale flips the picture: Neon's unlimited records favor a 20,000-contact donor file, while Communal's bands (250, 500, 1,000, 2,000, 5,000, 10,000) favor organizations whose member count is the real unit.

Switching from Neon CRM
Migration is free and scoped with you before you start, and there is no contract on Communal, so you can run the 30-day trial against a real export while your Neon term runs out.
- Export from Neon CRM. Pull accounts with membership terms and expiry dates, donation history with receipt numbers, and event registrations to CSV. Decide which donor-only contacts you want as non-member profiles.
- Map and dry-run the import. Communal's CSV importer maps Neon fields to membership types and plans, custom profile fields and tags, validates rows and runs a dry run. Past terms load as historical memberships; past gifts can be kept in your exports for audit.
- Go live. Connect your Stripe account, rebuild donation forms and campaign pages with CRA or US receipt templates, set renewal reminders, publish the portal and wallet cards, and turn on programs only if you need them.
